LanaColor splashed the sky in a rainbow and mist rose high as the water that cascaded down the jagged rocks of the mountainside met the churning water below. Fog coated the mountain top and hid the jungle vegetation from the outside world, but it wasn't invisible to all. Along the rocks where the emerald grass of the jungle grew thin and moss spread out of every crevice, where one could feel the moisture of the clouds around their faces, a young girl rested her tired legs after a long day of hiking up the rugged mountain trails. Her dark hair wrapped around her face from the small breeze the whipped around her, but she only sat uncaring and watched the water plummet to the river below.

I wear a mask upon my face
That shines with happiness and grace
It's spun in gold and strung with lace
And features bright and sure
The sequin beaded edges gleam
And silken thread lines every seam
With candy panted eyes that seem
To stare into your soul
The silver lips point up and smile
And crimson strings hang down in style
But it's been worn for such a while
That sometimes I forget
Why do I wear this on my face?
What brought about the style and grace?
You'd see if you unstrung the lace
That underneath I cry
a dangerous hallucinationThe light coming through the window was bright,
much too bright.
Even though my eyes were closed
I could see it-
The skin of my arms prickled,
sweat dripped from my brow.
It was two in the afternoon but…
the sun was setting
through the window facing east.
I should have seen the hutch,
shelves lined with bone china
decorated with delicate leaves and vines.
I was so thirsty
and reaching for cups that should have been there.
Instead I found a billboard of butterflies,
the colors raging
more than any rainbow
I'd ever seen.
Their wings fluttered and flashed
yet somehow they moved in slow motion.
I wanted to stand,
wanted to reach out and touch them but…
I couldn't move,
and yet I laughed
ignoring my dry mouth
and the tingling in my feet.
There was a tempest
on the rise
and in my blood.
A sugar rush disguised
as a riot of butterflies
and they were swarming me.
There was a small vial
of insulin in my pocket
